May 8 will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe. While the stories of D-Day and Dunkirk are well versed, China’s resistance against Japan is one of the great untold stories of the Second World War and one that contributed heavily to the Allies victory.

Seventy years ago, as the main eastern battlefield during World War II, China fought heroically against Japanese aggressors for 14 years. In 1942, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt commented that if China had not been involved in the war, or had lost to the Japanese, one could only imagine how many Japanese army corps would have been deployed not only in China but also in other nations such as Australia and India.

China’s first domestically-built aircraft carrier,launched for fitting-out on April 26 last year, signified that China had mastered the skills to build medium-sized and even bigger aircraft carriers. On May 13 this year, this aircraft carrier (China’s No.002) took a key stride forward when it set out for official sea trials.

“Comfort women” were a group of women who were coerced by the Japanese army into working as sex slaves during WWⅡ.Of these, Chinese women made up half of the total number of 400,000. They were forced into comfort women centers and allocated to Japanese army as military supplies.
